Skills To Be Developed

The internship provides an opportunity for students to integrate classroom learning from the curriculum with direct practice in the child welfare field. Emphasis of the internship includes the application of coursework related to family systems, social work methods, child development, human behavior in the social environment, and diversity.
 

• Data gathering skills, including the opportunity to practice gathering information from clients, collaterals, and records for effective casework practice.
• Assessment/Intervention/Termination Skills, including the opportunity assess risk factors related to child maltreatment; to observe and implement various intervention strategies effective in child welfare casework practice; and to develop closure skills.
• Interviewing skills, including the opportunity to plan and conduct interviews with individuals and with families receiving child welfare services.
• Recording skills, including the opportunity to write assessment summaries, letters, and summaries of involvement with clients, and other related paperwork.
• Scheduling and prioritizing, including the opportunity to plan/implement a weekly work schedule.
• Relationship building and interpersonal skills, including the opportunity to work with clients, other professionals, and supervisor.
• Professional attributes and attitudes, including the opportunity to develop skills reflecting social work values and ethics and to participate in professional development.
