    Explore the history of the Fort Hunter Park Service Station in this year’s special exhibit. Built in 1929, the Fort Hunter Park Service Station has served the community in a variety of ways over the past century. Once home to an automobile service station, café, antique store, mini golf course and more, there are unlimited possibilities of what lies ahead for this historic building.

    Spend time outdoors this fall at beautiful Detweiler Park enjoying The Leaf Thief by Alice Hemming and illustrated by Nicola Slater. Dauphin County Parks and Recreation and Penn State Health are excited to provide an interactive Storywalk®. Squirrel is happily counting the colorful leaves on his tree when he notices—gasp!—one is missing. Convinced there's a thief in the forest, he sets off on a frantic quest to find the culprit, dragging his calm and patient friend Bird along for the ride. As Squirrel suspects everyone from Mouse to Woodpecker, he eventually learns a gentle lesson about the natural cycle of the seasons.

    Ready to take your running off-road? Join us at Detweiler Park—an ideal program for beginners or road runners looking to explore the trails. Guided by experienced runners and set in the beautiful, wooded hills of Detweiler Park, this program covers trail running basics including proper form, pacing, safety, and how to tackle varied terrain with confidence.

    Fall Homeschool Days

    During our Homeschool Days, students will discover the rich history of Fort Hunter in a series of 40-minute programs taking them throughout the park. This season’s programs include Story of the Susquehannock, Native American Games, Student Mansion Tour, and Uncovering History. Registration will open on Monday, August 4, 2025.

    Weekly Wellness Walks

    , Harrisburg
    Enjoy a moderately paced walk around Wildwood Lake while enjoying the trees and animals at the park. September - December - The walk will occur from 1-2 PM, weather permitting This will be a walk on paved, gravel, and dirt surfaces. You can choose to walk only a portion, then turn around at any point if you would like to customize the length of your walk to your individual fitness goals.

    “Picking up pawpaws, put em’ in your pocket, way down yonder in the pawpaw patch.” That old familiar Appalachian Trail tune is a melody of the ages. Meet a Naturalist in front of the Mansion for an afternoon walk with a chance to learn about the largest native North American fruit, the pawpaw. This program is part of the Park Rx series of programs sponsored by Highmark Blue Shield. Space is limited. Pre-registration required.

    Create your very own "Pumsucculent" (Succulent Pumpkin)! We will have a nice variety of pumpkins for you to choose from and we will help you create a succulent arrangement on top! You will use a variety of succulent cuttings, moss and Fall accents! Pumsucculents are adorable FALL decorations, centerpieces or gifts. After pumpkin season is over, create your very own succulent garden with the succulents!
